President’s Message – October 2016
I am fully planted and looking forward to harvesting my winter crop. I know not everyone is as excited as I am about growing cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc., so if winter veggies are not your favorite, please fully plant anyway and donate to the food bank.
Garden Hours: Please note the garden hours are changing. We now have predictable, seasonal hours for the entire year. From Nov. 1 to Feb. 28 hours are 7 AM to 5 PM, and March 1 to Oct. 31 hours are 7 AM to 8 PM. Starting next week we will be closing at 5 PM. Our operating hours are determined by the Dept. of Parks & Recreation and we cannot alter them.
Orchard Work Party: In keeping with the earlier sunset time, the orchard work party hours are now Tuesdays from 3 – 5 PM. No late arrivals, please.
Orchard Theft: It is unfortunate that someone is stealing the fruit off the trees in our orchard. It appears to be happening on Saturdays. Please help us catch the thief and pay attention to who is in the orchard. I think we all know Alan, and anyone else authorized to be in the orchard will be wearing a bright yellow vest. If you see someone in the orchard who shouldn’t be there, please take a picture or write down the membership tag # in their car. If I find out who is doing this, they will lose their plot immediately!
Critters: The critters are on a mission to eat everything they see. I am hearing reports of gardens being completely planted one day and completely gone the next. Your fence will not help to keep the critters away so be sure to cover your crops.
November Work Party: The next work party is Saturday, Nov. 5 from 7:30 – 9:30 AM. Your help is needed to catch up on garden maintenance! The weather is forecast to be cool that morning, so come on out and get some annual hours completed. As always, the garden will be closed to members not participating in the work party.
Board Meeting: Everyone is welcome to attend the Board Meeting Sat. Nov. 5 at 9:45 AM in the large barn. Last month we had a great turn out and every seat was filled. Join us and see what’s going on in our garden.
Garden Review: The next garden review will be during the work party on Nov. 5 at 7:30 AM. Members will be checking for plots to be fully planted. If you receive a tag on your plot, it is a friendly reminder. All formal correction notices will be emailed to you.
Extra Soil: If you are building raised beds (get approval first!) or are amending your plot, you can take extra soil from (or place unneeded soil in) plot Q14, in the back row (southwest corner of the garden). Reminder: Do NOT put soil in the dumpsters.
Chipotle Fund Raiser: Last but not least, LBCG will receive 50% of the proceeds from designated sales at Chipotle on Saturday, Nov. 12 between 5 – 8 PM. Print the flyer below, show it on your phone, or just tell the cashier to apply your purchase to the LBCG fundraiser. This event is valid only at the location at 1800 Ximeno Ave., Long Beach (cross street Atherton, near the Traffic Circle). Share with your friends!
